ADR Notable Launched to Help Mediators

Legal tech startup offers first-of-its-kind technology tool to serve the dispute resolution profession.

COLUMBUS, November 17, 2020:  ADR Notable, a cloud-based platform for mediators, arbitrators, and other dispute resolution professionals, celebrates the national public launch of its software on November 17.  Founded by attorney-entrepreneur Gary Doernhoefer, ADR Notable provides mediators with an intuitive, secure, and easy-to-learn platform to capture and work with notes they take during mediation sessions.    “I have tremendous respect for the work that mediators do,” said Doernhoefer, “so it is important to me personally as well as professionally to launch this product that will help them in their important work.”

Gary Doernhoefer, the initial general counsel for the travel start-up Orbitz, was inspired to develop the platform while collaborating with colleagues at the Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University.  An aviation attorney having recently served as General Counsel for the International Air Transport Association (IATA), he was exploring opportunities to expand the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the airline industry.  “I was very fortunate to be able to learn more about mediation from the outstanding faculty at OSU, which has one of the highest-rated ADR programs in the country,” said Doernhoefer.

ADR Notable, a SaaS cloud-based platform, is designed to help mediators at all stages of the dispute resolution process, combining an array of practice and matter management tools with the innovative digital Noteboard that is the centerpiece of the product.  Mediators use the Noteboard during in-person or virtual mediation sessions to capture notes and work with them to generate movement toward agreement.  When proposals have been agreed upon, they are automatically transferred to a term sheet document that can be customized, distributed, and securely stored.  President of the Ohio Mediation Association Charlotte Parsons calls ADR Notable a “game changer for the way I manage my mediation cases.”

ADR Notable arrives at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has generated an unprecedented upsurge in the use of mediation as an alternative to litigation.  With many courts closed to all but emergency filings, mediation provides access to justice for those seeking to resolve conflicts of all kinds outside of the courtroom.   Long used in family law and commercial matters, U.S. Courts have recently been referring  more and more cases to mediation, from mandatory mask-wearing in Atlanta, Georgia to the surge in cases nationwide between landlords and tenants and mortgage lenders and borrowers in the wake of the COVID-19 economic crisis.   By cutting down on the busywork involved in a mediation and enabling a tactical and efficient use of notes, ADR Notable allows mediators to fully focus on helping parties arrive at a resolution for the conflict at hand.
